Have You Ever Really Listened?
I recently finished reading a novel called The Art of Hearing Heartbeats, and one idea from the book has stayed with me long after I turned the final page.
The story suggests that true seeing and true listening happen beyond the physical senses.
At first, that sounds impossible. We see with our eyes. We hear with our ears. What else is there?
But the longer I sit with the idea, the more I recognize its truth.
How often do we look at something without really seeing it?
How often do we hear someone's words while missing what they are trying to say?
How often do we rush through a beautiful moment while our minds are somewhere else entirely?
The older I get, the more I believe that presence is a form of perception.
When we slow down enough, we begin to notice things that cannot be measured or photographed.
The softness in someone's voice when they speak about something they love.
The feeling of arriving home after a long season of uncertainty.
The quiet wisdom that arises when we stop trying to solve every problem and simply sit with ourselves.
The subtle sense that life is always speaking to us, if only we are willing to listen.
This is one of the reasons I continue to be drawn to practices like Restorative yoga, meditation, Reiki, and time spent in nature. Not because they add something new to us, but because they help clear away enough noise for us to notice what has been there all along.
Perhaps the deepest forms of seeing happen when we stop looking so hard.
Perhaps the deepest forms of listening happen in moments of silence.
And perhaps the heart has always known things that the mind is still trying to understand.
This week, I find myself wondering:
What in your life is asking to be listened to more carefully?
Not fixed.
Not analyzed.
Just listened to.
